Claudia is the best person I know. I have known her for over 15 years. We became close friends when our boys grew up playing hockey together. Since I met her, Claudia has been a pillar of strength for everyone that surrounds her including her family and the million friends that she has acquired over the years. She is my best friend, and she is a best friend to so many more.
The year of 2016 has been a difficult one for Claudia and the Shore family. In February, Claudia became very ill and was hospitalized with a severe case of Influenza-A. She was hospitalized for 9 days followed by a home stint for 7 weeks to recover. She met with a Hemotologist to raise her white blood cell count and worked with a Pulmonologist to get her lung functions back. She was then diagnosed with COPD and had to stay on oxygen until her lungs recovered enough to get around and return to work. The Cardiologist then discovered that Claudia had Pulmonary Hypertension and diabetes. She had an angiogram in June and the doctors applied a stint into her right coronary artery that was 90% closed.
At the end of October, Claudia went to the ER with bronchial issues, and they discovered that her white blood cell count had plummeted. On November 9, her doctor ordered a bone biopsy, and on Nov 11, Claudia received the news that she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), which is a very aggressive type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes abnormal myeloblasts (a type of white blood cell), red blood cells, or platelets. Following a series of tests and bone marrow biopsies, Clauda was hospitalized on Nov 29th to start a very intensive round of chemotherapy that includes an experimental chemotherapy drug with the expectation of being hospitalized for a minimum of 30 days.
As some of you know, Claudia has had a really tough time once the experimental drug was introduced into the chemo routine. Claudia experienced severe swelling and bruising and has an extreme loss of blood platelets.
I visited with Claudia this weekend, and despite all that she is having to endure, she remains steadfast and in good spirits. She was worried about me and the others that came to visit her. Again, this just shows the type of selfless person that Claudia is and continues to be for her friends and family.
For anyone out there that doesn't know how we can help Claudia and you just want to be there for her, I have started this page to raise money for her medical expenses. Claudia will need a bone marrow transplant. Claudia's brother, Ernst, is a 100% match for her. We need help to make this happen ASAP - by the end of December. Fortunately, Claudia has already met her medical insurance copayment for the year of 2016, but 2017 is right around the corner, and her deductible will start over again. Claudia will also need to pay back-payments on her medical insurance once she returns to work. This doesn't include any medication and treatments she may need to have once she is released from the hospital.
If you can help, please donate to help bring Ernst over from Germany for the bone marrow transplant. Any additional funds that are raised will help with any of Claudia's future healthcare expenses.
Again, Claudia is the best person I know, and she is always there to show her support for anyone in need. Let's join together and give back to her.
