Who is Classmates Forever?
Classmates Forever is an nonprofit 501(c)(3) offering support to the underprivileged students of the Balkan region, specifically Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro, by personally delivering school supplies to those living in extreme poverty.
Who is Classmates Forever targeting?
As a newly independent country, Kosovo is one of the poorest countries in Europe, and holds the youngest populous in the Balkan region with thirty-eight percent (38%) of citizens being under the age of nineteen (19). A high demand for educational infrastructural reform is required; provided constraints; Kosovo's government invests four percent (4%) less than any other European country in education.
Albania, with more than twenty-five percent (25%) of its population living under the poverty line, has the highest child labor rates in Europe, as a direct consequence of big gaps in equity in its education system. There are 14,000 out-of-school children living in Albania. Secondary enrollment rates are among the lowest in the region, with an enrollment rate of seventy-four percent (74%). Learning outcome measures show that Albanian students lag behind their peers in the region in both literacy and numeracy.
What does Classmates Forever do?
In January 2015, Classmates Forever, Inc. was founded on the foundation that no individual should be deprived of hope. Hope, or “shpresë” in the Albanian language, is a term that holds many different meanings and invokes a variety of emotions. Hope is much more than a dream or desire. Hope is also the mindset that anything desired in a dream is possible. Even more, it encompasses the opportunities for an individual or a nation to turn dreams into reality.
At Classmates Forever, we recognize the economic and psychological benefits of investing in the education of Balkan youth, and that is the driving force of our mission. Our organization aims to provide students with the tools necessary for success. We aim to provide over 1,000 students each summer with school supplies such as backpacks, textbooks, notebooks, writing utensils, and calculators.
