On August 7th Jennifer was admitted to the hospital with heart palpitations. She was referred to specialists in St. Louis at Barnes Hospital. After a month of tests and results, there was a confirmation of AL Amyloidosis.
Amyloidosis is a rare bone marrow disease that deposits amyloid proteins in various organs which over time causes damage to the organs. In her case, it was her heart. Thanks to the team of doctors at Barnes Hospital, this was caught unusually early, which is not usually the case with Amyloidosis.
On September 18th, she started chemo treatments every week for the next 4-6 months, to also qualify for a bone marrow stem cell transplant. The Drs were hopeful this treatment would put her in remission because this was caught so early.
During this time her family, friends and co-workers were hoping and praying for the best possible outcome.
From the beginning Jennifer had the attitude to “KICK AMYLOIDOSIS ASS” through all tests, and the chemo
and new FDA approved drugs brought in to help remission be possible.
While trying to maintain her great sense of humor, this has been a very trying time for her and her 3 children and her mother. Her entire family has been through all the ups and downs and continuing unknowns with this sudden diagnosis, as she has never had any kind of health issues prior.
While not being able to work has been a huge adjustment, it's been necessary to focus on her illness and recovery.
She has continued to improve, but the treatments take an incredible toll on her physically and emotionally.
In February, Jennifer received the 2 week long stem cell transplant. In which her heart also gained the strength back
that the amyloid proteins had damaged. That transplant process was the next phase in a 6 month
journey to staying in remission.
Being hospitalized on and off for the last 6+ months, not being able to work, see her family or enjoy her life day-to-day
life has been necessary to recover and be treated.
However, losing her strength, her hair and her quality of life has not affected her spirit!
It’s only made her thankful and has reminded her how lucky she is for her family, friends, and medical team.
Although she has dearly missed her work family, and all the good times she has had with her dogs, family and friends,
She is now recovering at home for the foreseeable future.
During this time, she hopes to get stronger and back to a better all the way around. She still has several months of follow up appointments and positive reports. We are all hoping and praying the worst is behind her!
Please help us show support to Jennifer and her family. And show her she has not been on this journey alone.
We all are behind her 100% and love her 100%. We too want to help her “KICK AMYLOIDOSIS ASS”!
