Hello everyone!
My name is Julian Clarke. I'm from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and I have just been accepted into medical school at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri for the incoming 2015 class.
I attended Santa Clara University (2010-2014) to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry while playing NCAA Division 1 basketball. After that degree, I attended University of Toronto to pursue a Masters degree in Exercise Science while playing CIS basketball.
To study medicine has always been my dream. Washington University School of Medicine is a top medical school in North America. I found out on April 1st that I had made it onto the waiting list, and on April 30th I learned that I had been accepted!
In grade 11, I became interested in the brain, and the more I learned, the more I wanted to become a neurosurgeon. I have always been a strong critical thinker, which I believe is one of the most important characteristics any doctor should have, especially when working with the brain. My desire to be able to bridge the gap between thinking critically, and applying that skill in a clinical setting is one of the biggest reasons why I wanted to go to medical school. I relish the opportunity to make a strong contribution to the quality of a person’s health and well-being.
The road to becoming a neurosurgeon is particularly grueling, financially as well as academically. Here’s my plea: as an international student (Canadian) attending an American medical school, I will not qualify for American financial aid. I can apply for loans from Canadian banks but the cost is astronomical: the university estimates approximately $300,000 (U.S.) for 4 years of medical school. I don't know if I will make it anywhere close to that mark, but I'm going to try as many ways as I possibly can. It is my hope that you will donate whatever is within your means. Every penny helps!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Please spread the word to help me keep the dream alive!
