On 31 May, I'm attempting to run 10K to raise funds for musical charity The Telling. It may take me longer than some and it will be hard work. I look like a beetroot after 6K of continuous running at the moment - 10K seems a long way further.
The money raised will enable the pressing of a CD of the music soundtrack of our concertplay film "Vision" on the life and music of Hildegard von Bingen which was recorded, largely in single takes in July 2020. We don't yet know exactly how it will be released but if not on the record company who usually release our work, we will produce and distribute it ourselves. The costs for pressing and doing artwork will be about the same either way.
The CD of the soundtrack will be dedicated to the memory of my wonderful colleague mezzo, Ariane Prüssner who sadly just died of lung cancer.
Ariane was such a special artist and I had the joy of joining voices with her in the most special and magical of ways for 26 years. There is no other singer who has ever come anywhere close in terms of the sheer joy of singing together. This was a special "once-in-a-lifetime alchemy" of our voices sounding and intertwined together - each knowing what the other would do even before we knew it ourselves.
We are thrilled to have this opportunity to preserve this high-quality recording of Hildegard's music (which features Ariane, myself and harpist Jean Kelly) and release it on CD so it can enjoyed for posterity. It is special that we have this recording of Ariane and can keep her voice alive in this way.
The film of Vision was selected by The Guardian's reviewer Tim Ashley as a Summer Watching & Listening Highlights (August 2020) alongside the Salzburg Festival & Edinburgh International Festival:
“Norburn and mezzo Ariane Prüssner are mesmerising in the music… it really is wonderful"
The Telling is a musical charity which creates staged concerts to bring early and classical music off the page to reach wider audiences. We deliver public and school workshops, concerts and concertplays, both live and online, and our touring includes forming residencies in places around the UK where no or little professional early music performances take place - this includes Liverpool, Wolverhampton, Worthing, Hastings and, soon, Barrow-in-Furness. Our second CD, Secret Life of Carols (for First Hand Records) reached no 25 in the classical charts and was selected for Best Christmas Album lists in The Guardian, BBC Music Magazine, Daily Mail and Classic FM.
