Our westie, Clarence, was born 12/5/2024 and just as we were finishing up potty training, we noticed that he was starting to ignore us, like he couldn’t hear us. He also started bumping into things, so it was obvious that his vision was also being compromised.
We took him to our veterinarian, where he was diagnosed with a Portosystemic Shunt.
The loss of hearing and blindness is being caused by the blood not being filtered through his liver to remove toxins. The medication and prescription diet are helping to reverse the hearing and sight loss, but it is only temporary. The medication is formulated to help his condition for 10 months at the most.
We have to wait until he is old enough (6 months) to get the surgical repair to his liver. His organs and arteries are too small right now to even attempt surgery.
We are struggling to meet the financial costs of his care until he grows enough and then the surgery itself. The surgery cost between $8,000-$10,000. Medication and prescription diet cost $200 per month. If successful, Clarence should live a normal, happy, healthy, westie lifespan.
Any donations will be greatly appreciated and will go to assure our adored Clarence receives this life saving surgery, recovers and lives his best life.
