The Beach Shack & Lazy Sundae Staff Need Your Help

Donation protected
Today was a new day in this strange reality.  Today I wasn’t getting ready for my normal Saturday day shift at the Beach Shack and neither were my fellow coworkers, for the first time in thirteen years, except when the Shack was closed for a holiday.  Today the Beach Shack is still closed with no end in sight, because of the most heartbreaking and difficult decision David and Rebecca ever had to make last Sunday to shut down operations at the Beach Shack.  Today Marta, Mauri, Leo, Gloria, Doris, Sergey, Anna, Jaye, Lorenzo, Tracy, Mikey T., Salvador, Alex, Bryan W., Bryan Hawaiian, Gizelle, Nicole and the rest of the Beach Shack staff are still laid off and won’t be getting  a normal paycheck next Friday, March 27.  Today, Lazy Mike’s is open but operating with limited capacity but today, most of the staff is still laid off because today and indefinitely, the dining room at Lazy Mike’s is unable to open for dine-in service.  Today is another day that our whole world is adapting to this new way of life.

Deciding to act as global citizens, David and Rebecca’s decision to close last Sunday was an effort to protect staff and customers from Covid-19, realizing that the most impacted would be staff.  Fortunately, Lazy Mike’s has the flexibility to be able to offer options for takeout/carryout and delivery, but that doesn’t make up for the huge financial loss of closing the Shack.  Hours have been cut and a skeleton crew is working at Lazy Mike’s.  All the revenue from the Deli and the online gift certificate sales are being used to pay operational costs and staff as best as they’re able to.

The amazing people I have worked with for thirteen years, who I consider family, are scared about how they’re going to pay their bills.  Just like everyone else, they have expenses….rent/mortgage, cell phone, groceries, utilities, and insurance.  We can all hope that our local and federal governments will help their constituents during these economic challenges but that will take time.  Unemployment has been applied for but who knows how long that process will take place.

No one can disagree that David and Rebecca are two of the most generous people in Falls Church and Arlington.  Their reputation for honesty, integrity and can-do attitude are well-known.  Whenever there has been a need for a fundraiser for a school, non-profit organization, or a crisis like an earthquake, hurricane, or government shutdown, the Beach Shack has been a resource where funds have been raised for those in need.  They would never brag about this because they are the type of humans who know giving back is the right thing to do because what goes around, comes around and now’s the time to return the love.

I’m creating this fund so that monies can be divided and given directly to the staff of your favorite Beach Shack family.  I know that as a community we can come together and take care of those in need, especially the staff of the Beach Shack and Lazy Mike’s who work so hard to cook and serve us delicious food.  Their paycheck next week will be based only on one week’s wages.  Let’s come together and help in this time of dire need so that our staff and their beloved families can hope that one of these today’s will be like they used to be.

Thank you for being amazing customers.  We look forward to a time when the Beach Shack, Lazy Mike’s and everyone in our communities will flourish again.  No donation is too small.
