On 14th March, Claire travelled from Thailand to the UK with her 12-year-old son Caleb to visit her mum, recently diagnosed with bowel cancer. She left Thailand feeling off. A stomach bug, she thought. Nothing serious.
Five days in, sitting in her dad's living room, Caleb looked at her and said "Mum, your eyes are a bit yellow."
That was the beginning.
Within days Claire was in A&E, then hospital. A CT scan revealed a mass on her pancreas. The diagnosis: pancreatic cancer. Her first thought wasn't about herself. It was "What is going to happen to Caleb?"
Claire has lived in Thailand for eight years, moving there as a single mum to give Caleb a better life. She teaches Drama at an International School in Chiang Mai. Thailand is home, not just for Claire, but for Caleb too. Their friends have become chosen family. Caleb, now a thriving autistic pre-teen, has found success after success there, in his school, his friendships, and the life they've built together.
Then came a PET scan, and with it the best news she'd ever received. The cancer hadn't spread. Surgery could remove it. "This was like the best gift I have ever been given. It meant I can think about having years instead of months left with my son."
Claire's Whipple procedure is scheduled for 13th May. One of the most complex surgeries in medicine.
This is where she needs your help.
My name is Will Langston. I'm one of Claire's friends and colleagues, we work together at an International School in Chiang Mai, where I teach Art and oversee Digital Media. Claire has asked me to organise this fundraiser on her behalf. All funds raised will be transferred directly to Claire to use for her treatment and recovery.
Our goal of £10,000 will go toward chemotherapy costs in Thailand, flights back to Chiang Mai, accommodation during recovery, and the everyday living costs that don't stop just because life does. As a single mom with no financial safety net, every pound raised means one less thing Claire has to worry about while she focuses on getting better and getting back to her boy.
Our first goal milestone is £5,000, help us get there! ***WE HIT THIS! Next target is £6,500. Help us get there.
"I will face and fight this for my son. He is my sonshine and makes my world bright, and I will do everything I can to keep shining for him, as he does for me."
