Help Us Keep Moon
Donation protected
Moon was adopted on Saturday 1/18 from the MSPCA Northeast animal shelter in Salem. We had two wonderful days with Moon getting to know him, watching him explore his new home, and cuddling him. My 12-year-old son quickly became his preferred human and they have been inseparable since. On Tuesday 1/21, Moon began vomiting and drooling, he hadn’t eaten much since we adopted him either. I took him to MSPCA Angell emergency room on Weds 1/22 morning where they gave him anti nausea medicine to help with the vomiting; we thought he was on the mend but by Friday morning he still was not eating. I took him back to the ER where they found he had a fever and enlarged kidneys. Moon is currently in the hospital while they determine what is causing his kidney problem. It could either be an infection of some kind from the shelter, FIP, or renal cancer. All of this has been incredibly difficult for my son and I, Moon is the kitty he has been dreaming of since we finally moved to a pet friendly apartment last October. Even though it’s only been six days, Moon is very much a part of our little family.
The total cost of his stay and diagnostics has been $4,066 so far. I had set aside some funds for emergencies for our new pet but this has blown through it. To make financial matters worse, the pet insurance policy I have states that any illness that occurs within the first 30 days of the policy will be considered a pre-existing condition and won’t be covered. The shelter has offered to waive the adoption fee ($250) to offset the cost but nothing more. MSPCA Angell does not do payment plans; they refer you to two high interest credit card providers.
I don’t want to give up on our new cat, but if the costs continue to rise we may have to return him to the shelter where he will likely be put down. I really hate to make a crowdfund like this, but getting Moon healthy and bringing him home is my only goal. I am open to hearing about other resources in MA if you know of any. We are so grateful for any help, no matter the amount. We just want our boy to come home.
