On the 19th December 2017, Clara Joan Smithson was born 5 weeks early at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford with a very rare bowel disease. Since then, she has lived in the Newborn Special Care Unit where she currently resides in Intensive Care.
Recently, Clara had emergency surgery which resulted in 75cm of her bowel being removed (that's most of it). She defied the odds and surprised the medical professionals -she survived. However, Clara is left with Short Gut Syndrome, a life changing condition for both her and her parents.
Clara's parents, Acacia and Dean, have received incredible support from the nurses, doctors, consultants, and surgeons at the John Radcliffe hospital (or 'hotel' as its accidentally been referred to a few times!). With your donations, they can continue to receive this support and other families going through a similarly traumatic time with their newborn baby can too.
We're raising funds for SSNAP (Support for the Sick Newborns and their Parents) and Oxford Children's Hospital by cycling from the John Radcliffe Hospital to Paris in March 2018 with two of my closest mates Xavier Raj and Ali!
About our chosen charities:
Both SSNAP and Oxford Children's Hospital are critical to Clara's quality of life.
They both provide state of the art medical equipment, fund additional training for nurses, contribute towards medical research, and provide home from home areas for parents including tea and coffee supplied living rooms on site to accommodation allowing parents to stay near to their sick newborns. Clara and her parents have benefited from all of this and more so far.
If Clara recovers from her next operation she's expected to live in the Oxford Children's Hospital for the rest of the year. She'll learn to crawl here, take her first steps here, and she'll be treated here along with 60,000 other children this year. With your help, we can make a very difficult year for some the best it can possibly be.
