Send CJ to PROMYS 2018!

Donation protected
We are raising money to send a talented at-risk teen named Carl Joshua Quines to the Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS) at Boston University.

CJ is one of the most exceptional students I mentor online. (I am Ms. Lin, NY Math Circle instructor, PROMYS alum, and past director of the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament.) CJ just graduated from a Philippine high school and got into a highly selective summer math program without financial aid. Because of CJ's considerable talent, grit, and at-risk background, I'm seeking your help to get him to a safe, welcoming environment where he can thrive as a person and mathematician.

CJ identifies as gay but his Christian fundamentalist family rejects his identity. His parents lead a local church of the Lord's Hand Apostolic Ministries, which has extremely stringent expectations and practices. He left the church and started supporting himself in October 2017. This entailed moving all of his worldly possessions multiple times, and making ends meet by tutoring and grading for the ArtofProblemSolving.com.

In March 2018, CJ's parents found him, arranged his eviction, took him home, and promised to "make him straight" before he turns 18. CJ a fighter, but he was deeply discouraged by this sequence of events. He needs so much to hear that people see his worth, recognize his resilience, and want to help him realize his hopes and dreams!

Assuming that he makes it, CJ will be legally emancipated as of September 1st. At that point he must support himself once again, while applying to colleges overseas (forbidden by his parents).

In the meantime, CJ would be safer (and likely exceptional) at PROMYS. CJ won Second Prize internationally in the 2017 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, with a project that established bounds on the metric dimension for families of planar graphs. In both 2016 and 2017, CJ was a finalist in team selection for the Philippine International Math Olympiad team, but his parents withheld travel authorization in order to knock him out of 2018 IMO team selection. He was also blocked by his parents from participating in the 2017 International Olympiad in Informatics in Iran, despite making the team. He just qualified again for the 2018 Philippine IOI team. (Click to see CJ's resume & github.)

If you help CJ get to Boston, he will also be able to get in-person mentoring for MIT PRIMES 2018. CJ is the sole international admit to this prestigious year-long program, which matches promising students with MIT-affiliated researchers to tackle open questions in math. CJ's efforts have yielded two manuscripts in progress: one on the bounding numbers of cops and robbers on graphs, and another on extremal constructions for visibility graphs. As luck would have it, PROMYS 2018 will also be offering advanced seminars on graph theory, which would accelerate his mathematical maturity.

CJ needs the following monies to go to PROMYS:
$1800 for PROMYS instructional fees
$2800 for Boston University room and board
$1400 for roundtrip travel from Valenzuela City to Boston
   $160 for visa costs
   $340 for books and contingencies
$6500 in total

CJ's dream is to go to MIT, so any additional funding would go towards application fees, testing fees, and helping him survive on his own as he completes more research during his gap year.

Be a part of giving CJ a real shot at fulfilling his potential.

Be a part of making sure CJ doesn't end up like Alan Turing or Amelia Perry.

No amount is too small to let CJ know that he's got you in his corner.

Please help and leave a few words of encouragement if you can.
