Civil War Battlefield Trip

My Story

My name is Todd Freese .  I teach history at a great school in Midland, Texas, Trinity School . I have taught for over ten years and I love teaching and love history!  I always believed the best way to teach history is to immerse yourself in it.  That is what I want to do, bring history alive for my students with stories, videos, pictures and artifacts. 

How You Can Help

Beginning next year Trinity is starting a bold inititave in the history department.  We are offering electives for high school students.  One of those is a course on the Civil War.  I am preparing the curriculum and thought how great it would be to see all of these famous sites of the Civil War. My wife will be at math camp, so what the heck, I have ten free days.  What better way to spend them to go on a road trip?

I am embarking on a ten day trip through some of the most important venues of Civil War history. Help me get to these sites and and "immerse" my students in the history. I plan to travel to several sites and will blog and vlog while I'm there.  These will be saved for the upcoming year. 

The Plan

Here is the plan:

May 31 - Depart Midland for Shiloh, TN (900 miles)
June 1 - Shiloh Battlefield 
June 2 - Leave Shiloh for Appomattox National Park (655 miles)
June 3 - Tour Appomattox National Park, after tour depart for Fredericksburg National Military Park (113 Miles)
June 4  - Tour Fredericksburg National Military Park, after tour depart for Manassas National Battlefield (50 Miles)
June 5 - Tour Manassas National Battlefield, after tour depart for Antietam National Military Park (66 Miles) 
June 6  - Tour Antietam National Military Park 
June 7 - Open day in Washington D.C. - maybe Mount Vernon, depart for Gettysburg (46 Miles)
June 8 - Tour Gettysburg National Park
June 9 - Depart for Midland, Texas (1680 Miles)

It takes money to do all of this.  However, I plan to cut costs as much as possible.  I can eat cheaply and don't care where I stay.
