Civil Rights For Charles: Stop The Torture!

Charles Helmer is a young disabled man in Minnesota, who is being forced to undergo Electroconvulsive Shock (ECT) against his will. To do this to a non-consenting person is torture, and Charles is fighting for his right to refuse shock.
Charles is an intelligent and spiritual man who likes to play the guitar and read the Bible. He likes video games and wants to visit his friends and family members. He is not allowed to leave the premises of the group home currently. People who know Charles describe him as having a great sense of humor. He is concerned about losing his personality—the things he values— due to the loss of his liberties, forced drugging and shock. He shared, “After a shock, I forget my personality; I have to ask people, 'Am I still funny?’ 'Is this funny?'”
Charles has reached out to human rights groups like MindFreedom International, who have sent out action alerts on his behalf. Unfortunately the public outcry has not been enough to stop this. Please help us cover the costs of retaining a lawyer who cares about Charles's human rights, and paying for other legal defense costs.
