9/15/25 UPDATE: I'm working with a couple generous folks in Huntsville, who are advising me on how to do the repairs myself, which should more than halve the cost, if I can do it successfully!
Hi folks...
On June 20th I got into a "fender bender" in Chattanooga on my way to a Hustle game in Atlanta. Their fender was clearly much stronger than mine.
My collision insurance won't cover the cost of the repairs. I've finally gotten the car back to Huntsville (thank you Paul, Andrew, Michelle), and now I'm looking at a few thousands dollars for the following:
- Hood
- Radiator
- Compressor
- Minor body work on front
Obviously these repairs far exceed the value of the car (2000 Honda Civic with hundreds of thousands of miles...), but I haven't been able to find anything equivalent for this kind of money. It's a good vehicle, serviceable engine, transmission, and wheels, and my mechanic has always impressed with its longevity, so piecing it back together (again) doesn't seem like a total waste.
Some personal things have kept me from working as much this summer as I typically would, so this expense is a little out of reach for me right now. I've started a new job, but the hours are going to be limited for a little while.
There are a million things wrong with the world right now, I'm under no false illusions about where this stacks up in the grand scheme of things. I'm also fortunate to have made things work up to now, with the help of a lot of people, and I'll keep figuring things out as we go, not getting this funded isn't the end of the world...
Cheers,
Elijah
