City College Norwich Student Motorsport Team

At City College Norwich, our students actively participate in Student Motorsport, a prestigious competition that provides hands-on experience in the motorsport industry. The challenge allows students to take on a variety of essential roles, including:

• Pit Crew – responsible for maintaining and preparing the car at race events.

• Design Engineers – developing and manufacturing components to improve performance.

• Graphic Designers – creating team branding, including jackets, T-shirts, and race car liveries.

• Media Team – covering race weekends, providing pre- and post-race content, and managing digital outreach.

This initiative is fully inclusive, welcoming students of all backgrounds and abilities, including those with additional learning needs. By participating, students develop essential employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and practical hand skills. They also gain resilience, ownership, and professionalism, all of which enhance their career prospects in motorsport and other industries.

Last year, two students applied the knowledge and experience gained from their participation in race weekends to successfully secure apprenticeships through a competitive recruitment process. They have since progressed into industry roles, demonstrating the real-world impact of the skills developed through the Student Motorsport.

Additionally, three SEND learners took part in the challenge, significantly improving their communication skills and self-confidence. Their growth has enabled them to exceed initial expectations and advance to a Level 2 programme, showcasing the transformative effect of hands-on, inclusive learning. It is inspiring to see their ambitions supported and their confidence flourish as they continue their educational journey.

Team Success and Growth

In the 2023 season, our team achieved an impressive 4th place in the championship, showcasing our students’ dedication and technical ability. Our driver, Elliot Lettis, played a crucial role, demonstrating expert knowledge of the motorsport industry and providing valuable technical feedback in a professional and supportive manner.

Building on last years’ experience, we believe we now have the winning formula. With insights gained on vehicle performance, track conditions, and equipment optimisation, we are confident in our ability to compete at the highest level in the upcoming season.

Beyond the track, our commitment to building business partnerships has been recognised at a national level. We won the Commercial Business Award at the BRSCC and Student Motorsport Awards Night, celebrating our successful collaborations with local businesses that provided sponsorship, expertise, and equipment.

The Challenge: Funding the 2025 Season

Despite our achievements, we are currently facing a major obstacle: securing funding for the 2025 season. To compete in all seven races, we require £10,000. Additionally, we have ambitious plans to expand student involvement, allowing more learners to gain track side experience. To achieve this, we need an additional £10,000 to support a new entrepreneurial initiative where Business students will develop an “Arrive & Drive” rental package, providing real-world experience in business planning and operations.
