Circumnavigating the Roman empire by historic means

My name is Géza Frank, I'm known by my Roman name Gaius Flavius Constantinus Aeneas Stilicho, and I live Roman history.

I want to attempt the circumnavigation of the frontiers of the entire Roman empire by historic means and in historic equipment. The frontiers of the Roman empire are a cultural heritage site, which is meant to be inscribed bit by bit into the UNESCO World heritage site list. It would become the largest world heritage site in the world.

However, there are many obstacles in the way of this great project. Some zones are active war zones and many places suffer from poor infrastructure and separation by modern geopolitics as well as poor availability of education on the topic.

The history of the Roman empire is a binding agent in the entire region. Everyone living along the Roman frontiers today, has a common and shared cultural heritage from classical antiquity. It is my mission to remind the people living in the countries that are located on the former territory of the Roman empire of their shared past and the syncretic and uniting power of this classical cultural heritage.

The equipment I am using on this journey is faithfully replicated from archaeological originals and ensures a historic experience. I intend to give presentations about local and wider Roman history in schools and towns along the way and help visualise the culture and it's relevance to our current geopolitical issues.

In order to complete the journey, I will need to buy a horse and a pack animal as well as historic saddles and pack saddles. I will need to say farewell to my home for over a year or two, and will need to invest in camera and presentation equipment fit for the job.

I will further need to invest a lot of time in preparation to this undertaking, notably setting up a project that ensures the building of a historic ship reconstruction, which will serve in the journey and shall be donated to a living museal project after the journey.

I am an officer of the Austrian armed forces and have completed 20 years of service as well as countless expeditions and experiments in Roman gear. I am the Initiator of the EU funded Project "Living Danube Limes", which saw the reconstruction of a Roman river patrol boat, with which an experimental and promotional journey of over 2000 km down the Danube, from Germany to the Black Sea, was successfully conducted in 2022. It was the longest continous Roman boat journey since antiquity.

I am also the curator of the largest festivals of late antiquity at the Danube limes site of Carnuntum as well as at the battle site of the River Frigidus in Slovenia.

I am part of the international Roman cavalry excellence project Ala I. Augusta and actively involved in the research of Roman army fashion in late antiquity.

The funds raised here will help me greatly in the preparation of this great connecting journey.
