Dear friends,
I am a photographer and visual journalist who does a lot of work in activism and social justice. For over 10 years, I’ve documented protests in the streets of New York City. My photography highlights communities of color and queer folks. The purpose behind my work has always been to connect with my community and with people that are important to me. I put a lot of love and care into my work and I am so much more than just a photographer — I’m a friend, neighbor, supporter, organizer, and activist.
I’ve been traveling in my home state of California and stayed in Oakland for the past two weeks. On the day I was leaving Oakland to drive to Los Angeles, I had my rental car broken into in the parking lot of an In N Out near the Oakland Airport. They smashed the window of the car, pulled down the back seat to access the trunk, and pulled out two of my bags. One backpack they stole contained my entire livelihood, it had almost everything I use for my photography work: laptop, camera, two lens, two batteries, a memory card, SD card reader, AirPods, two spare headphones, two camera pouches, and my backpack itself. They also stole a small duffle bag containing some of my essential items: shoes, underwear, socks, bras, my physical therapy equipment (I suffer from leg injuries), towel, and some misc items.
I am devastated from this incident and had a public meltdown in the parking lot. How could I have been so stupid and naive to have left my belongings in the car? The thought of having to buy all that equipment again is overwhelming. I have never publicly asked for money, but a number of friends suggested I start this fund to help me get back on my feet and get back to doing what I care about most, which is my photography work.
Any little bit of money will help me immensely. I’m so blessed to have created such a wonderful community of friends and supporters, it shows that the care I put into my work is not in vain. Thank you so much for your consideration and donating to my photography recovery fund.
Thanks,
Cindy Trinh
