CINDY'S MEDICAL CRISIS: Urgent Update August 27, 2021
Cindy Albury needs us again now, more than ever. Here’s an update from her husband, Mike Albury, recapping what’s happening now and why your help is needed urgently:
"Cindy had a very bad fall a week ago Wednesday. Our doctor prescribed two cat scans. One of the top of her head and one of the cervical (neck) area to look at the hardware installed eight years ago, as well as the repair surgery two years ago. The first scan showed a concussion. The second showed a damaged vertebrae pressing on her spinal cord below the previously installed hardware. On that basis the doctor recommended consulting with neurosurgeon specialist, Dr. Lasner at Mount Sinai, as soon as possible.
We got to Fort Lauderdale this past Thursday and went to Mt. Sinai where another cat scan and MRI showed bad news for Cindy: any further impingement on the spinal cord might produce complete paralysis. The only option to prevent that happening is surgery.
It will be a long and very risky surgery to fuse several vertebrae together. Mt. Sinai gave us a cost package today from Dr. Lasner. $70,000. Half must be paid before surgery, God only knows where that money is coming from and I’m waiting to hear later today about a possible family loan. Right now Cindy is scheduled for surgery on Friday September 3. The complicated surgery will require some time in ICU, and these beds are in short supply right now due to Covid.
Cindy had dialysis on Monday in Florida and is scheduled for dialysis several times in advance of the surgery.
It’s hard to ask, but we have no choice and no insurance. Any donation, no matter how small (or large) would be hugely appreciated.
That’s it for now. I’ll advise again as things develop. Many thanks for all the messages of prayers and heartfelt concern that are coming to us. We really appreciate your love and continued support.” – Mike Albury
TO FRIENDS OF CINDY & MIKE
Thank you for doing anything you can to help. We know this is a tough time for everyone and truly, anything you can give will be so very helpful and appreciated in working to cover these medical expenses. We love you, Cindy!!! Thanks, Everyone for doing what you can as we reactivate this campaign to give Mike and Cindy all the help we can at this difficult time.
HERE'S MORE INFO AND WHAT HAPPENED IN 2018, WHICH WAS THANKFULLY A VERY SUCCESSFUL SURGERY & RECOVERY:
Our dear friend / dedicated community volunteer / Critter Sitter Extraordinaire, Cindy Albury, and her wonderful husband, Mike, need our help. Cindy is facing some very delicate, dangerous, and expensive surgery next week.
The 22+ years of dialysis, three times a week, due to Lupus, has affected Cindy’s bone density. Two soft deteriorated vertebrae need to be replaced right away.
Dr Lasner and the medical team at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, will perform the reconstructive surgery on Thursday, July 12th, 2018 (Cindy’s Birthday!!)
After recuperating in Intensive Care and at the hospital, Cindy will remain in the halo brace (which weighs about 9 pounds and is attached to her skull to support the spine) for several months. She will also be treated with a bone stimulator for several hours per day. That is to help the bone grow around the cadaver bone replacement-vertebrae, and to stimulate hardening of the bones overall.
Cindy and Mike have worked hard—and without benefit of any health insurance— paid hundreds of thousands of dollars of medical expenses over the years. It’s taken all of their life savings, and although it's not easy to ask, they need our help now.
Cindy has been a tireless champion and force for good in the community. She and Mike have been virtually whinge-free, and somehow managed to keep their amazing senses of humor, throughout these health challenges.
They're amazing. They rarely ask for anything, but they need our help now and any donation you can make toward this surgery and the post-op care (and expenses related to travel back and forth to South Florida), will be deeply appreciated, to say the least!
Cindy bounced back with amazing aplomb from another very serious surgery about five years ago, and we’re all cheering for an encore recovery from this tough situation.
Mike Albury will keep you posted and updated here.
Thank you, thank you — we all love you, Cindy!!!
