I am the long time friend and coworker of Ciara Reynolds, her husband Connor Luby and their four beautiful children; Ruairí(6) Ciarán(4) Cillian(3) and Ruadhán(2). This amazing family gives so much to all the ones they love and now are experiencing every parent’s worst nightmare with a very sick child in the hospital. For those of you that know this family - this may feel like Deja Vu, as they had already experienced a traumatic medical emergency with their oldest daughter, Ruairi almost exactly 2 years ago.
At the start of April, the entire Luby-Reynolds household was hit with what they thought was just a bad virus. The virus went from bad to worse and unfortunately hit their son, Cillian, the hardest. What started as a virus turned into pneumonia. Cillian's pneumonia progressed beyond any at-home treatment and he was admitted to the hospital on April 8th, 2024. Upon admission to the Pediatric ICU, the doctors believed he would be home within the week after a short course of IV antibiotics. He has been active and fighting this infection since Monday, while charming all of the nurses and doctors as he does with everyone he meets.
Unfortunately, his outward appearance and energy were not matching his scans and tests. On Friday, April 12, 2024, his CT scans and bloodwork showed bilateral necrotizing pneumonia. To care team at Children’s St. Paul made the swift decision to place a chest tube to hopefully drain the infection, and allow the antibiotics to reach the infection. Due to the extent and location of the infection - they now needed a specialist surgeon to place the tube under the Interventional Radiology team at United Hospital. Cillian was placed on a ventilator for this procedure to allow his body to heal, and shield him from the discomfort of both the procedure, as well as the following lung treatments as they put antibiotics directly into the lungs to try and attack the bug head on. The team did an amazing job placing the tube, and we are now in the waiting phase to see how well. The hope is that this procedure will help the antibiotics actually get to work fighting this virus.
This family is near and dear to so many, and gives so much to their community. Connor is a high school English teacher for White Bear Lake, Ciara is the Assistant Director for Mactír Irish Dance in Minneapolis.
This is every parent's worst nightmare, and somehow under unimaginable circumstances, they are facing this once again with a second child. Please consider helping this family if you are able, and please keep Cillian in your thoughts and prayers as he battles this infection.
