This is my 12 year old daughter Ciara Mae. She is the kindest, most loving child you could ever want to meet. Please consider donating and sharing the link, you never know how far her story might travel.

HELP CIARA MAE KEEP THAT TUMOR AWAY

ICU at Hasbro Children's Hospital:  Over the past several months, as she transitioned into middle school, she had quite a few headaches.  On November 21, 2018, Ciara had a MRI done because of her persistent headaches, otherwise she was a completely healthy, happy, beautiful, caring 12 year old. During the MRI they found she had a tumor in her 3rd ventricle that was blocking her brain from circulating the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Instead the fluid ballooned up in one of the ventricles causing the painful headaches and occasional vomiting. They placed a drain in her head to relieve the pressure while she awaited surgery to remove the mass. Due to arriving the night before Thanksgiving, we had to wait 5 days until the 5 hour surgery.

Surgery: The surgery removed at least 90% of the JPA brain tumor but the surgery caused her some damage. She now has a condition called diabetes insipidus, which she will need medication for.  According to her doctors this a lifelong condition because her body has not started producing the needed hormone on it’s own (but I continue to be optimistic for full recovery). The surgery also caused loss of short term memory, this has been very challenging. Anyone who knows Ciara can tell you that she is very smart and has always excelled at school. It is hard to see her have difficulties with basic skills. As her brain heals, I believe my little girl will continue to "wow" her doctors. Through all of this she has had a smile on her face everyday. We will find out if she needs chemotherapy or any additional treatment in several months.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital:  On December 26th, we were transported by ambulance for intense therapy at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston. We will be here in patient for 3-6 weeks. Her short term memory is significantly affected and the recovery time is unknown at this time.  As they monitor her diabetes insipidus, she is also working on body strength and endurance. I personally believe and pray she will fully recover.

Funding Needs: I don’t yet know what additional care she will need when we return home but she will require home tutoring before returning to school. In addition to medical bills, I have not returned to work since she was admitted to the hospital on November 21, 2018. I am on an unpaid leave from my job as a special education teacher at a Massachusetts middle school. We still have a journey ahead of us as Ciara recovers. Until she is stable and able to return to school, I will continue to take care of her. I have reached out to different programs but don’t qualify in Rhode Island because I work in MA and don’t qualify in MA because I live in RI.

About Ciara Mae: Ciara is a 12 year old middle school student. She is the best big sister to her brother Liam. Ciara is an all around great kid, excellent student and talented in diverse areas. For example, she was part of the student leadership team at her elementary school, she placed in the top 10% worldwide as a math Olympiad, participated in Center for Dynamic Learning which is a drama program for 6 years, she is a talented singer, an artist, among other things. She even took the initiative, as a 6th grader, to start a Bananagrams club at her middle school.

Thank you: She has had an out pour of love and kindness. Her hospital rooms have been FILLED with cards, Christmas gifts and friends visiting. My coworkers from school have ban together and made a considerable donation, Chris’s work was very generous, as well as my church, my family even pooled money that would have been used for Christmas gifts to each other and gifted it to us. I can’t even quantify how many acts of kindness have come from her elementary and middle school family. The significant people in my life have been available 24/7 doing whatever it takes to help Ciara, Liam and me. There are too many things and people to list, but thank you all! I can’t mention everyone but you know who you are, thank you.

PLEASE take a moment to add a comment telling others about Ciara.

A few people have expressed concern about gofundme taking a portion of what they give. Evidently, years ago, they did take a large percent but now they only take 2.9% and .30 cents from each donation. So if someone donates $50, gofundme would take $1.50 plus .30 cents. Here is a link if you want to check to math Percent Calculator
