Chuwy’s story so far

Chuwy came into our life in September 2020 and quickly became our best friend. Only a few months later, Chuwy began limping and was diagnosed with osteochondrosis (OCD) in her left shoulder. She underwent surgery in April 2021, which unfortunately led to long-term arthritis in that joint.

After trying several treatments, including platelet therapy, she was started on Librela injections in early 2023. These monthly injections have been life-changing — giving Chuwy the freedom to move and enjoy walks again.

Sadly, her insurance has now reached its £8,000 limit for this condition, and continuing her medication privately costs around £96 a month — on top of £161 insurance. It’s a heavy financial burden, and without the injections, her pain and stiffness would quickly return.

Looking to the future

We have been researching possible long-term solutions for Chuwy and came across shoulder replacement surgery, pioneered in the UK by specialist orthopaedic surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick at Fitzpatrick Referrals in Surrey. This procedure replaces the damaged shoulder joint with a custom implant, offering dogs with end-stage arthritis a chance at a pain-free life.

It’s important to say that this is not a confirmed plan yet — it’s an option we hope to explore further with Chuwy’s own vet. Before anything could happen, Chuwy would need to be assessed by specialists to determine whether she’s suitable for the surgery and to understand the costs involved.

Why we’re fundraising

This fundraiser aims to help cover Chuwy’s ongoing treatment and give us the chance to explore advanced options like the potential shoulder replacement. The funds will go towards:

• Librela injections and other pain management treatments

• Specialist consultations and assessments

• Imaging, rehabilitation, and general care

Whether the money goes towards continuing her current treatment or helping to make a surgery consultation possible, every penny will directly support Chuwy’s wellbeing.
