My name is Timothy Davis, and it is with tears in my eyes that I announce the passing of Charles A. "Chuck" Shandry. He would have been 68 later this month. Chuck was an avid photographer, a Navy veteran, a truly devout fan of all things anime, and a great friend.
Chuck's devotion to otakudom can only be described as "Plus Ultra." I cannot remember ever seeing him leave the house without a portable DVD player and a stack of manga. And wherever he went, he spread that love with those around him. He was constantly introducing newcomers to the artform, and spreading the good word of Otakon, the convention to which he devoted so much of his time and energy.
Chuck took the utmost pride in his volunteer work with Otakon. He first attended during its inaugural year of 1994, and he began volunteering in 1996. It was his greatest joy to see so many people coming together to share and express their mutual love of anime. And it was a point of particular pride that the artifacts of Otakon's history that he preserved are now on display at the convention's Ota-Museum.
Not long before his passing, Chuck entrusted me with the responsibility of serving as the executor of his will. To that end, I am creating this campaign to pay his final expenses, such as seeing that he is properly cremated and buried alongside his parents, who also passed just a few months ago. It will be my honor to see him safely back home to Shamokin, Pennsylvania. If we are fortunate enough to raise the funds necessary for that purpose, the remaining money will be used to carry on Chuck's legacy of generosity and goodwill, and I will donate it to charitable causes on his behalf - particularly Otakon and the local library.
