For those of you who know my sister, Leesha, you’ve probably been touched by her contagious spirit. She’s more than likely hugged you, smiled, asked how you were doing, laughed with you, and kissed you goodbye, wishing to see you again soon. The truth behind those hugs, and smiles, is that she was experiencing chronic pain. Pain so crippling, that she struggled getting out of bed that morning. Non-stop pain that causes her to ‘schedule’ her days around that pain.
To give you a better visual, here’s Leesha’s description : ”On an average day, it’s a constant pressure…a throbbing ache with a pulsating/pounding in the back of my head, at the base of my skull, in my temples and sometimes behind my eyes. It usually feels like my neck doesn’t want to do its job anymore…like holding my head up is just too much. And on the worse days, I feel even more pressure…behind my eyes that can turn to stabbing pains behind one or both eyes and the pulsating/pounding at the base of my skull worsens so much that I can’t do anything other than lay down with ice packs on my head....”
When I think of her experiencing this pain, it brings me to tears. It completely breaks my heart to know that my beautiful sister is only surviving this life. Not living it.
When asked how she does it..how she survives each day, she says ”I tell people I’ve had to learn to adjust to my new normal. But I don’t know that I’ve ever actually adjusted to living in chronic pain. I’ve just learned to survive it. God’s grace is sufficient in my weakness. Ultimately, that’s how I get through…and holding onto the hope that God will provide healing for me somehow, some way. So anytime someone sees me…I’m in pain. When I’m smiling, it’s a conscious choice in spite of the pain. The pain I fight is horrific and sometimes, even more so because it’s so invisible to everyone else.”
Leesha has a neurological condition called ’Chiari Malformation’. What this means, is that a person has too much brain to contain. This condition can interfere with the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) between the skull and spinal canal. The interference can result in the collection of cerebral spinal fluid in the subarachnoid spaces of the brain and spine. (which is basically what is causing the pulsating pain throughout her head. The "CSF" has no where to go)
Can you even imagine? Leesha has dealt with this pain for too long. This money that we're trying to raise is to pay for her to see a specialist in New York named Dr Rosa. He has patented a non invasive method for discovering and eliminating the issues that Leesha has. This new equipment allows for viewing of the neck in novel ways, including weight bearing and additional positions of the spine. When used in conjunction with dynamic x-ray imaging the doctor now has a view of the delicate structures of the spine that has never been available until now. Difficult and often missed diagnoses are clearly and quickly seen allowing for swift, precise, and more cost effective treatment to be given to the patient.
