Chromebooks for Native American Students

I am raising funds to provide help Tohono O'odham and other Native American students thrive in the virtual school environment and help their elders stay safe.  My goal is to reach $10,000 within 30 days, to provide chromebooks for Native American students at San Xavier School located on the Tohono O'odham Reservation, who otherwise would not have  a computer for their virtual school attendance.  The majority (80%+) of the students are members of the Tohono O'odham and Pascua Yaqui tribes, located in the area of South Tuscon, Arizona.

Kids needing laptops for school is not a unique situation in the "COVID-19 normal", but what really strikes me is the importance for social distancing when it comes to protecting the health of Native American Elders.

I was inspired to establish this fundraiser by a lifelong friend of mine who is a teacher at San Xavier School, who was explaining why keeping elders safe is so important.  "Our elders are the keepers of the culture, the traditions and the language.  If anything happens to them all of this disappears."

School is back in session.  I am seeking help to reach this goal as quickly as possible, so that kids in need will not fall behind due to the lack of technology.

We have all been in conversations about historical disadvantages that create lasting inequities.  I really want to help make sure that these kids have the same opportunities to learn as more-privileged kids do, and that they are able to do their part to  protect their elders and keep their culture alive.  Will you help?

Your donation of any amount will go toward the purchase of a chromebook for a student whose parents cannot afford one.  Your donation of $200 will underwrite at least 1 chromebook for one child, possibly 2 if we can find quality refurbished ones.   If you can afford 2 chromebooks, or even 3, please consider it.   At the end of the 30 days, we will provide as many chromebooks that the donations will buy.

All donated funds will be used for purchase of the chromebooks.  If there is a little bit of funds left over, such as the remainder being not enough to purchase another chromebook, I will write a check to the school, to help them offset other technology costs.  I am currently working to get quotes for the chromebooks, and I am having the chromebooks shipped directly to San Xavier Mission School to ensure they reach the kids as soon as possible.   Thank you!

p.s. San Xavier Mission Church and School is part of the Catholic Diocese of Tuscon and is aware of this fundraising effort and appreciates the care expressed.  They also continue to fundraise.  More information can be found at
