Christy Kimbro's Fight Against Breast Cancer

Donation protected
Three words no one ever wants to hear: "You have Cancer."  For Christy Kimbro, these words came mere days after her 41st birthday.

What started as an ache in her underarm turned into BREAST CANCER.  Christy had been feeling pain under her right arm but brushed it off to be a pulled muscle from working out.  When the pain wouldn't go away and only got worse over the week, she decided it was time to get checked out by her doctor.  The night before she went in, she was feeling around the area and then noticed a small bump on the very right side of her right breast.

The next day, the doctor was also about to brush off the underarm pain as a pulled muscle since there were no other indications that anything was wrong.  Thankfully, Christy told her doctor about the lump.  She was immediately referred to the cancer center.  The bump she felt is in fact a lump and she has 6 swollen lymph nodes.  They took some labs and told Christy they would be in touch the following day.

When Christy texted me about what was going on, I was surprised, but it's Christy... so I figured the lump could be easily removed and the swollen lymph nodes were probably just them gearing up to fight an infection.  NBD.  I told her to just let me know when she heard back.  I kept re-reading the texts but still didn't think it was anything more than a small hitch in the road - most likely benign or just precancerous and easily removed.

On August 21, the text came through "Just got the call. It's breast cancer."  [Not even going to get into the fact that they told her via a PHONE CALL?!?!!!]  I couldn't believe it.  My text back just said "Oh my God Christy."  (Later on, jokingly, Christy said "well, it is 2020." Ha) I had no words for the diagnosis.  I truly cannot believe that she is going through this.  Christy is one of the most healthy people I know!

Christy's treatment plan includes chemotherapy - first every other week for 4 sessions and then weekly for 12 sessions.  Unfortunately, they did find more cancer in the same breast, so now she will have a mastectomy to completely remove the breasts followed by radiation and reconstructive surgery.

She had her port surgery and went to her first chemo treatment on September 9 and actually did really well!  But then she dealt with an infection in her blood from the incision for the port.  She spent 4 days in the hospital on antibiotics and going through chest x-rays and EKG's to make sure the infection didn't spread to her heart valves (they didn't!).  The original port was removed and they had to put a PICC line in her arm to resume treatment.  Christy will undergo a second port surgery on the other side sometime in the next few weeks.  Not to mention her beautiful hair has already fallen out, which she wasn't mentally prepared for so soon. :(  Thank God for great wigs!

Christy is a fighter and I KNOW she will beat the cancer.  Hands down.  This fundraiser is to help pay for the onslaught of medical bills coming their way.  Funds raised will enable them to have a little peace during such an incredibly tough time.  They won't have to worry so much about finances, copayments, deductibles and all that insurance/medical bills entail - they can focus on the fight.  Christy will have to miss a lot of work to go to her treatments, surgeries, doctor appointments, etc.  She is also not going to feel up to cleaning and cooking (a meal train has already been started for her if you'd like to help by dropping off a meal!) so this will also help to fund the cost of house cleaning and anything else that pops up along the way.  This is going to be a long journey, but anyone who knows Christy knows she's absolutely going to kick butt and take names!

Christy and her husband, Evan, live in Greensboro, NC and have been married for 13 years.  They have two beautiful daughters, ages 6 and 3.  Please consider donating to this amazing family to help them ease the financial burdens while she kicks this cancer to the curb.

Thank you, in advance, for your love, support, and prayers as they take on the fight!
