This past Christmas, my family went through one of the most difficult experiences of our lives.

As a daughter, you never expect to spend Christmas in a hospital, making urgent decisions about your mother’s health while quietly wondering how you will ever manage the cost.

My mom had been visiting me in Vancouver for a few months, and we were so grateful for that time together. We were especially looking forward to spending Christmas as a family. But on December 23rd and 24th, everything changed.

She suffered kidney failure, heart failure, and a severe urinary tract infection with possible sepsis, and needed urgent medical care.

We spent Christmas in the hospital, surrounded by fear, uncertainty, and the reality of how serious her condition was. Watching your mother go through something like this is incredibly difficult to put into words.

She did have visitor medical insurance. However, the claim was denied, and it did not cover her hospitalization or treatments. As the days passed, the medical costs continued to grow.

As someone who works in travel insurance, I want to be very clear: travel insurance DOES work—but having the right guidance, fully understanding the policy, and having support throughout the process makes all the difference.

This experience has only reinforced why I do what I do: to properly guide, educate, and support my clients before, during, and after their trips.

I am also a single mother of three children, and I simply do not have the financial capacity to take on a hospital bill of this size. Making the decision to stop her care in Canada and send her back to Mexico was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, but it was the only way to prevent an even greater financial burden and ensure she could continue receiving care.

Even so, the expenses from those days remain. We are now facing a medical bill of over $20,000 CAD while we continue working toward a resolution.

I am asking for help because this is not something I can manage on my own. Any contribution, no matter the amount, truly makes a difference and brings us one step closer to resolving this situation.

Estas pasadas Navidades, mi familia vivió una de las experiencias más difíciles de nuestras vidas.

Como hija, nunca imaginas pasar la Navidad en un hospital, tomando decisiones urgentes sobre la salud de tu mamá mientras, en silencio, te preguntas cómo vas a poder afrontar los costos.

Mi mamá había estado de visita conmigo en Vancouver por algunos meses, y estábamos muy agradecidas por ese tiempo juntas. Especialmente, esperábamos con ilusión pasar la Navidad en familia. Pero el 23 y 24 de diciembre, todo cambió.

Ella sufrió falla renal, falla cardíaca y una infección urinaria severa con posible sepsis, por lo que necesitó atención médica urgente.

Pasamos la Navidad en el hospital, rodeadas de miedo, incertidumbre y la realidad de lo grave que era su condición. Ver a tu mamá pasar por algo así es increíblemente difícil de poner en palabras.

Ella sí contaba con seguro médico de visitante. Sin embargo, el reclamo no cubrió todos los gastos, su hospitalización ni los tratamientos. A medida que pasaban los días, los costos médicos seguían aumentando.

Como alguien que trabaja en seguros de viaje, quiero ser muy clara: el seguro de viaje SÍ funciona, pero contar con la orientación adecuada, entender completamente la póliza y tener acompañamiento durante todo el proceso hace toda la diferencia.

Esta experiencia solo ha reforzado por qué hago lo que hago: guiar, educar y apoyar a mis clientes antes, durante y después de sus viajes.

También soy mamá soltera de tres hijos, y simplemente no tengo la capacidad financiera para asumir una cuenta hospitalaria de este tamaño. Tomar la decisión de detener su atención en Canadá y enviarla de regreso a México fue una de las más difíciles de mi vida, pero era la única forma de evitar una carga financiera aún mayor y asegurar que pudiera continuar recibiendo atención.

Aun así, los gastos de esos días siguen presentes. Actualmente enfrentamos una cuenta médica de más de $20,000 CAD mientras seguimos trabajando para encontrar una solución.

Estoy pidiendo ayuda porque esto no es algo que pueda manejar sola. Cualquier contribución, sin importar el monto, realmente hace una diferencia y nos acerca un paso más a resolver esta situación.
