Christmas for a deserving student!

My name is Joel Garver, and I am the Audio/Visual Communications teacher at Junction City High School in Junction City, KS.

In this, my first semester of teaching I have been fortunate enough to meet and be able to mentor a student who attends JCHS. I have left his name redacted from this post, to keep his privacy safe.

After getting to know this student through staff meetings, small group meetings, and having him in my classroom, I learned of the hardship he has faced as a 19 year old. I will not go into too much detail regarding that, but will share the following:

He is 19 years old, and a senior at JCHS. His parents left him here in JC when they split up and moved to Georgia and Florida respectively. He was 18 at the time, and now lives on his own being forced to come up with the money to pay rent, utilities, groceries, and any other expenses that come along.

My fiance Kelsey and I have sort of taken him under our wings in a way, and with the help of a few other teachers at JCHS, we've made it very clear that we're here to help him. He has struggled academically throughout high school, and never had a semester where he passed all of his classes.

But a little update to that statement is that this semester he DID pass all of his classes!

He has had some financial hardship in terms of getting his US identification straightened out, as he is a military student who was born in Germany. The D.O. B. on his birth certificate does not match the date on his social security, therefore he was not able to get a license or any form of legal identification.

With the help of another teacher at JCHS, he was able to get that issue resolved, but it set him back about $250, which as he works part time (and goes to school full-time) he does not have the money to be able to do anything that most teenagers get to do.

He works up to 30 hours a week just to pay rent and get groceries, and even that hasn't been enough for him. This group of teachers along with Kelsey and I have contributed financially by purchasing a winter coat, some other clothes, as well as taking him grocery shopping every couple weeks.

Although we love being able to help him, the sad truth is we also have financial obligations that come before being able to help, so I have created this page in hopes that others will see the struggle this student is facing, and want to contribute.

This student is a very promising young man, and has a bright future ahead of him. I am currently working with him, as well as a few employees at Butler County Community College to see about getting him accepted and moving forward in higher education.

The money raised by this GoFundMe will be used primarily to get this student the clothes, groceries, and anything else he might need. Any money outside of that will be used to help him get through this next semester, and will be managed by myself and my fiance Kelsey.

This young man is a joy to be around, and when he gets outside of his shell, his smile is infectious.

I hope anyone who takes the time to read this will see the value in it, and contribute whatever they may be able to.

Merry Christmas to all, and thank you in advance for your contributions!
