On July 1, 2020 we moved to a new city across the country to follow our dreams. Within a month of arriving, my husband Christian, was diagnosed with a “Malignant Mixed Germ Cell Tumor” in a testicle that was growing at a unbelievable rate. This news immediately changed our excitement into uncertainty. After 3 doctors and without a biopsy to confirm the cancer, we went straight into surgery due to the doctor being 95% sure it was a malignant tumor just from the view of an ultrasound exam. The tumor consisted of 4 types of cancers; a Yolk Sac Tumor, Seminoma, Carcinoma and Teratoma. Germ cell tumors are very sensitive to chemotherapy and are usually curable, but Teratoma is the only germ cell that won't respond to chemo so if it ever comes back we may likely have to remove whatever organ it invades next.
As newlyweds, we didn’t imagine our life together beginning like this, this isn’t a chapter in our love story we ever imagined having to write. This isn’t the kind of news anyone wants to hear at the age of 23 after moving far away from all their loved ones, nor a journey anyone is ever prepared for.
Presently, Christian’s treatment is ongoing with the Huntsman Cancer Institution in Utah. This cancer story unfortunately will not end. It’s treatable, but not curable. Our oncology team told us the cancer was starting to spread out into his lymphovascular system and from here on out we are just a part of a waiting game with a 50% chance of a spread to his abdomen. Christian is currently attending regular appointments for lab tests, and will be getting CT scans every 3 months to check for tumor growth.
Everything happened so fast and the financial costs we now face are staggering. Christian was out of work until full recovery and even with insurance it’s financially devastating. This fund is to help us with the medical bills that are accumulating and will only continue to grow in the next months and years to come. We have tried our hardest to cover all the bills on our own, but it is beginning to pile up too fast for us.
We are sharing our story because we would like to ask for your help by providing a donation of any amount that is within your means. This will greatly help alleviate the financial burden resulting from us recently moving to a new city and not having much of a savings fund yet as well as the follow up appointments we will be needing in the next few months. El 1 de julio de 2020 nos mudamos a una nueva ciudad para seguir nuestros sueños. Un mes después de que llegamos, mi esposo Christian, de 23 años, fue diagnosticado con un "tumor maligno de células germinales mixtas" en un testículo que estaba creciendo a un paso alarmante. Esta noticia cambió inmediatamente nuestra emoción en incertidumbre. Después de consular con 3 doctores y sin una biopsia para confirmar el cáncer, pasamos directamente a la cirugía debido a que el médico estaba 95% seguro de que era un tumor maligno solo desde el punto de vista de un examen de ultrasonido. El tumor constaba de 4 tipos de cánceres; un tumor del saco vitelino, seminoma, carcinoma y teratoma. Los tumores de células germinales son muy sensibles a la quimioterapia y generalmente son curables, pero el teratoma es la única célula germinal que no responde a la quimioterapia, por lo que, si alguna vez regresa, es probable que se tenga que extirpar cualquier órgano que invada después.
Como recién casados, no imaginamos que nuestra vida juntos comenzara así. Este no es un capítulo de nuestra historia de amor que jamás imaginamos tener que escribir. Este no es el tipo de noticia que alguien quiere escuchar a los 23 años después de mudarse lejos de todos sus seres queridos, ni un viaje para el que nadie está preparado.
Actualmente, el tratamiento de Christian está en curso con Huntsman Cancer Institution en Utah. Lamentablemente, esta historia no terminará, es tratable, pero no curable. Nuestro equipo de oncología nos dijo que el cáncer estaba comenzando a extenderse a su sistema linfovascular y, de aquí en adelante, solo somos una parte de un juego de espera con un 50% de posibilidades de propagación a su abdomen. Christian asiste actualmente a citas regulares para pruebas de laboratorio y se le harán tomografías computarizadas cada 3 meses para verificar si hay un crecimiento de otro tumor.
Todo sucedió tan rápido y los costos financieros que enfrentamos ahora son asombrosos. Christian estuvo sin trabajo hasta que se recuperó por completo e incluso con el seguro es financieramente difícil. Este fondo es para ayudarnos con las facturas médicas que se están acumulando y solo continuarán creciendo en los próximos meses y años. Hemos hecho todo lo posible para cubrir todas las facturas por nuestra propia cuenta, pero está empezando a acumularse demasiado rápido para nosotros.
