Christian, Heart of a Warrior

Donation protected
On this New Year’s day I write to all of you reading with both excitement and fear for my family in the year of 2018. As my sister and her husband, Elizabeth and Daniel Engelhardt, announced yesterday, they received some heart wrenching news at Liz’s 20 week ultra sound. They were told their baby, Christian, has a heart condition and sent to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for further screening. At CHOP, they confirmed that Christian has hypoplastic left heart syndrome. This means that the left side of his heart is underdeveloped and during the course of 3 different surgeries they will need to make the right side of his heart make up for that. He will need surgery within the first few days of his life, again at 4-6 months, and then again at 2-3 years. This will be a long and scary journey but we are confident in the medical personal at CHOP and the healing power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Liz will need to relocate to within 30 minutes of CHOP when she hits 36 weeks of pregnancy and stay until Christian is strong enough to be discharged after his first surgery. This will be a big cost expense because she will not know if she makes it into the Ronald McDonald house until a day before she has to relocate. Hotels and other places to stay, plus the cost of food will likely rack up pretty quickly. Even if she does get into the Ronald McDonald house, the family is going to take a large hit financially because she will be unable to work for so long. Liz is currently working as a substitute teacher after being laid off 2 years ago and taking a 1 year leave replacement last year, she was unable to find another full time position for this year. This means that she gets no paid time off. Not only that, but Dan just started a new job with Dish Network as a more consistent income, but it does not pay as much as his old job and he needs to work his way up. Dan will have to travel back and forth during this time as well, costing them a lot of money in gas. The two of them are currently just getting by with both of their incomes, and they are going to need a lot of help to make it through this very difficult time.

If you would please prayerfully consider helping Liz and Dan out during this time I know that they would appreciate it forever. Please share this page and pray for the Engelhardt family as they welcome their strong little warrior into this world.
