I am intending to run 10 marathons in 10 consecutive days in May 2021.
The OGC -SPLASH is an Oesophageal-Gastric Cancer support group for Portsmouth and South Hampshire. We welcome anyone diagnosed with, recovering from, or having recovered from oesophageal or stomach cancer. We also welcome those facing gastric difficulties or individuals experiencing difficulty swallowing or eating food. Whatever your circumstances, we are here to offer support, share experiences and discuss our issues and problems, we are often able to help each other overcome areas of common concern.
Our Support meetings are held in the QA Hospital four times a year (or via Zoom more recently) and provide the opportunity for patients to meet former patients, some of whom are leading relatively normal lives; to air their concerns and discuss problems with members of the medical profession, including consultant surgeons, gastroenterologists, dieticians, physiotherapists and clinical nurse specialists who speak at the meetings on a voluntary basis.
On a personal note, my husband died of Oesophageal Cancer in May 2018,at the age of 64, and we used to run together before his illness took a hold and he was no longer able to run. He still supported me in my fundraising efforts during his many surgeries, chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions. I miss him running beside me but I continue, running alone, in the hope that by raising awareness of this disease, it may prevent more premature deaths.
This is my way of raising awareness and funds for this charity who help to support individuals diagnosed with this type of cancer. It is a tiny contribution to help in any way I can to make sense of such a loss.
I continue to run because he can’t… Chrissy
