On Monday, March 16, our friend Chris Sawyer was in a serious auto accident on his way home from work. He was hit by a drunk driver on Carolina Beach Road only miles from home and his VW bus was sent head-first into a tree. He suffered a C1 fracture in his neck, a broken hip, multiple pelvic fractures, broken ribs, a fractured ankle and a traumatic hernia among many other cuts and bruises. He was in ICU until his neck was stabilized and remains in the hospital until he can transfer to inpatient physical therapy which is expected to last up to four weeks.

He's been fitted with a halo brace to protect his cervical spine and allow his neck to heal naturally. He's also had metal plates and screws inserted to repair his hip, two pins placed in his right ankle and is scheduled for another surgery to repair the hernia.
Chris has worked for UPS for over 25 years and his wife Amy owns her own health food market in Carolina Beach. Time away from work combined with extensive medical bills and lawyer fees are going to make the next six - to - eight months physically, emotionally and financially challengining. Sawyer and Amy have a tough road ahead, but every day is one step closer to recovery.
