Chris's Russian Lifeline- HSCT/Chemo

My name is Jessica Tierney. I have set up this page on behalf of my boyfriend Chris Murphy, with the aim of raising money to help Chris go for life changing treatment for his Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Chris was diagnosed at the age of 18 with Relapse Remitting Multiple Sclerosis. (RRMS). Relapse remitting MS is associated with relapses that can last at least 24 hours in which the symptoms of MS worsen. This affects Chris on a daily basis; numbness and tingling, eye pain and vision problems, pain that runs down the spine, dizziness, stiff muscles, trouble moving his body and feeling weak and tired.
Chris is now 23 and requires a stem cell treatment which includes chemotherapy. This treatment, is not available in Ireland and unfortunately, is not covered by the HSE or private health insurance. The aim is to get Chris to Russia to undergo HSCT/chemotherapy in the next 6 months to a year.
Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation; (HSCT) attempts to 'reboot' the immune system, which is responsible for damaging the brain and spinal cord in MS. In HSCT for MS, hematopoietic (blood cell-producing) stem cells, which are taken from the individuals bone marrow or blood, are collected and stored, and the rest of the individual's immune cells are depleted by chemotherapy. Then the stored hematopietic stem cells are reintroduced to the body. The new cells migrate to the bone marrow and over time produce new white blood cells. Eventually, they repopulate the body with immune cells.
Chris has suffered side effects from medication that has been offered to him in Ireland and has exhausted many treatment options. Chris has been prescribed a form of injection and has had negative side effects including; low blood count, low platelets and has negatively affected his immune system. This treatment would really be life changing for Chris and his family members.
For those who know Chris, it is clear to tell that he is a friendly, caring person. He does what he can to go out of his way to make sure his family and friends are cared for, he is such a strong, positive person but day by day he is struggling to not let his MS affect his daily living. This is why this treatment would be so beneficial and life changing for him.
