Chris (Topper) Grenier’s Cancer Battle

My name is Melissa Grenier-Carroll and Topper is my brother. Where do I begin…his family has had numerous challenges over the years and they now face the most difficult one yet.

With previous health challenges, Topper found himself on disability and unable to work after many years in a rewarding career. He has been an amazing father to my nephew who had a stroke at birth and is special needs. Topper has devoted all he has to his family, while his incredibly strong wife Colleen has been the sole income earner for the family for several years.

This family has struggled with no medical benefits and with Colleen working in the travel industry…they were financially impacted during and after Covid. With the pandemic literally shutting her industry down, this resulted in her having to go on reduced income with an EI Benefits Work Share Program.

Now unfortunately my dear brother Topper has been diagnosed with Stage 2b Bladder cancer. The news rocked our family again as cancer is not new for us…

However the bad news doesn’t end there as the tumor in his bladder is very large and he has been told it may not respond to very aggressive treatment. He has been advised to have his bladder and prostate removed and be forced to eliminate urine via a pee bag for the rest of his life.

We have been told no matter the path whether he attempts treatment or has the surgery, his quality of life will forever be changed. This family needs help with more medical costs for medications, trips to cancer centre and for Colleen to be off work to be by Toppers side.
