Hello, my name is Scott Monk, and you have most likely come to this page via a link from The Montreal Assembly newsletter.
Early in the morning on Sunday Nov 16 my father Chris Monk passed away in the Milton (Ontario) Hospital. He had successfully battled leukemia and a life-threatening heart condition for many years up to that point. He will be dearly missed.
My family has decided to start a scholarship at the high school where he taught the majority of his career in order to honor his life and contributions. I have set up this GoFundMe to gather donations, which I will pass on to Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. The funds will be awarded to students who are passionate about STEM and music and who are looking for assistance to pursue post-secondary education around these interests.
My father was a lifelong musician. He spent several decades playing guitar for the Streetsville based choir group "Justus". He also had a crippling addiction to instrumental surf rock and performed in many groups of that nature. Fortunately, I was also able to play with him in one such group while I was learning to play drums, performing Shadows covers at local fan club meetups.
He spent most of his career teaching mathematics as the department head at Marc Garneau. He helped run many extracurricular activities, including an annual math retreat and trips to the NASA facilities in Texas.
It is undeniable that both of these factors had a major impact on my own pursuits. And so, with this in mind I am reaching out the mtl.asm community to see if anyone may also be interested in donating in order to help others in their pursuit of music and technology in his name.
Thank you for your consideration!
Scott Monk
