"This disease will never take away my humor...."
These words, full of resilience, are from our colleague and friend, Chris Peters. Chris, known for his zest for life and deeply loved by his wife Kristen, family, and friends, faced a challenging moment on November 3, 2023. He shared the following news: 'Received my initial diagnosis of Bulbar onset ALS. I'll be referred to Emory's ALS specialty clinic. Not the news I wanted. Kristen and I will spend today learning more and planning for the future. Your support has been invaluable, and I'll need it even more moving forward.'
Chris's journey to this diagnosis began with symptoms that led to multiple doctor's appointments, culminating in a confirmation of ALS on November 21st. Chris details this journey in the following excerpt from a Facebook post to his family and friends:
---------------------
'Facebook Family, I have some unfortunate news. I've been diagnosed with bulbar onset ALS.
Earlier this year, I had speech difficulties, slurring words and speaking slowly. Initially diagnosed with high blood pressure, which we thought was the cause, there was no improvement by early September.
I insisted on seeing a neurologist, emphasizing the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare. After extensive testing for various neurological disorders, a nerve conduction study and an EMG led to my referral to Emory's ALS center, where my diagnosis was confirmed on November 21.
Since then, Kristen and I have been informing close family and friends. I'm sharing this with you because you may notice changes in me, or see me using mobility aids.
As of now, I can still swallow, breathe, and move without pain. My speech is the only visible sign of my illness. But we know this will change, and we're preparing for the inevitable. Bulbar ALS makes time incredibly precious for us.
I've experienced a whirlwind of emotions, landing on acceptance, which brings some peace. But the thought of being denied a future growing old with Kristen is deeply painful.
Two things to remember: (1) Don't delay the things you want to do, and (2) Cherish every joy, big or small.
I'll keep sharing humor and our travel adventures, focusing on joy and togetherness with the time I have left.
Much love to you all!'

Chris's positivity, even in the face of adversity, serves as a beacon for us all. Chris and Kristen's passion for travel and dining is well-known. Their planned trip to Switzerland in June '23 was thwarted by weather. Many have asked how to help. Donating to support their travel and dining experiences seems fitting, allowing them to savor these adventures while they can. Let us come together to help Chris and Kristen navigate the path ahead. Your contributions will make a meaningful impact on their journey. 100% of the proceeds will go to Chris and Kristen. Thank you for contributing to their lifelong memories and making a difference.
