On August 10, I walked into an emergency room in Annapolis, MD. I was out of options.
I moved to Annapolis two months prior, with my saint of a partner, Sarah, and her lovely daughter. They agreed to come on this trip with me so that I could take a job that I would love.
Less than two weeks after we moved, that job was gone, due in large part to the tremendous pain my right foot and ankle were in, pretty much anytime that I walked. I made ends meet by doing food delivery, but the pain kept getting worse, and something much worse developed, an infection in my right ankle. With my foot in the condition it was, every step would make the infection worse. Three visits to urgent care facilities, and three different oral antibiotics, and the infection just kept getting worse.
So, back to August 10. I walked into that ER with Sarah, thinking I was in for a long series of IVs, antibiotics with names I could not pronounce, and time off my feet. What I was actually in for was a below-knee amputation of my right leg, followed by six weeks in hospitals, including four weeks of rehab and relearning how to live. The rehab therapists were great, the prosthetist was great, and I actually walked into my apartment this past weekend (albeit with a walker).
But the road to being back to myself is still long. I'm more or less broke, with Sarah and my family helping as much as they can. I still have lots of bills to pay, I am not able to drive yet (and modifying my vehicle to be able to drive could be expensive), and that means returning to a job could take some time.
I also have weeks of outpatient therapy, doctors appointments, more prosthetic appointments, and working towards getting a permanent prosthetic ahead of me. I'm lucky that I'm young, relatively, but even for a man of my age, recovery still will take time. And that time means I will need help financially to make it to the true end of this journey to being me again.
Every little bit helps, and I would be grateful for anything at all. Also, spreading the word would be even more appreciated, because I don't have the biggest amount of people that will see this.
If you can help, or know someone who can, it would mean the world to me, and to my family. I don't feel comfortable doing this, because it's not in my personality to ask for people to help me. So, if that tells you anything, know that any help is greatly needed, and also greatly appreciated.
