Chris Bergner Tuition Fund

Donation protected
Hello Everyone,

My name is Chris Bergner and I am a senior at  Ipswich High School (MA). I am accepted to Wentworth Institute of Technology as an Mechanical Engineering major. If I attend, I plan to add a minor in Business Management, as well as a concentration in Military Science through the Liberty Battalion of Army ROTC.  WIT excites me because of their urban setting and their co-ops which offer immediate integration of hands-on experience and research with the curriculum. It is, however, financially out of reach at the moment.

Funding Education: In order to attend WIT, I will need some financial assistance. Despite family and personal contributions, financial aid, student loans, work study, WIT Academic and outside scholarships, the cost for my first two semesters is still above what my family can afford to pay. My mother works as a teacher and my father works various jobs. I have applied for an ROTC scholarship but I will not know the full scope of the scholarship until later this year. In the meantime I need to look realistically at my financial situation. I am currently working 30+ hours a week at two jobs and saving for the coming years. Wentworth’s expectation of my financial contribution is $25,000 dollars. I need to raise a substantial portion of that within the next two weeks as an indicator that I will have sufficient funds to make furthering my education realistic. All donations that exceed the goal will be used towards tuition in future years.

Learning and Earning through CO-OPS: I would take my first co-op in the fourth semester. A co-op is a six month period (during the school year) or a three month period (during the summer) in which students stop taking classes and pay only for housing; during the co-op, they work a full time, paid internship in a career related to their major. I plan to do three co-ops over my time at WIT to earn money for my tuition, apply what I learn in the classroom, and gain experience in my field. One of Wentworth’s advantages is their programming for students like me who want to explore business startups related to their work and research. While at WIT, I would like to join the business club, as well as intramural teams to help me connect with other students.  After college, I plan to pursue a career in the Army Corps of Engineers.

Preparation for College: I have been heavily engaged both inside and outside of the classroom. This year my course load includes: Physics, Pre Calculus, Business and Entrepreneurship, French Four, Journalism, and an Engineering Independent Study. I was a captain of the Cross Country Team, organizing team events, mentoring new team members and providing leadership. I am the Student Representative to the Ipswich School Committee, which entails reporting the concerns and suggestions of students to the committee. As a member of Young Life, I hosted events, preparing for gatherings and even, at times, cooking for them.

Other Options: If I am unable to fund my beginning semesters at WIT, my options include taking my required classes at a local community college, doing a gap year in order to work and save college funds, or immediately serving in the Armed Forces for an eight year period and then furthering my education.

Your Part: I appreciate you taking the time to read about my campaign. I would greatly appreciate a contribution of any amount. If you feel that you are not in a place to donate any money, I completely understand. Would you consider sharing this with someone else who you think might be interested? If you have any questions or want more information please reach out to me!
