On Friday July 25 2014, while at home with her 5 year old son, and 2 year old daughter, Nicole suffered an acute stroke. After being rushed to Riverhead hospital, she was then immediately transferred to Stonybrook University Hospital where they had to perform an Intra-Arterial Thrombolysis to lessen the potentially tragic effects of the blood clot in her brain by breaking down the clot.
Upon arrival she had complete paralysis of her left side. Following the success of the surgery, 26 year old Nicole spent 4 days receiving daily CAT Scans, TEE heart scan, MRI, 24 hour EEG, and countless amounts of other tests. By the time she was discharged, Nicole was able to walk unassisted but still suffers from the lasting effects of this paralysis and struggles daily with the use of her left arm.
It was determined that the most probable cause of this stroke was the prescription combined hormonal birth control she was taking.
Why we need your help:
While able to return home to her fiancé and children for the remainder of her recovery, she still has a long road ahead, which includes the financial burden of this tragedy.
The average cost of ONE night in a NYS not for profit hospital is $1900 and the surgery that saved her life borders the total of her entire hospital stay.
In order to regain the full use of her arm, leg, and mind, Nicole will need to attend Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy three times per week. With this comes the addition of home medical equipment and monitoring devices.
She will need to continue to see cardiologists, neurologists, and her primary care physician along with surgical followups, and continued CAT scans for an undetermined amount of time.
How your contribution helps:
Our GoFundMe campaign is not only to help Nicole in her journey to recovery, but to help her family not suffer from the crippling financial burden of this tragedy.
If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting this incredible family, you can see the deep connection and love they all have for each other. With this campaign we hope to continue the quality of life that Nicole and her fiancé, John have worked very hard to provide for their two children.
It is still undetermined when Nicole will be able to return to contributing to support her family, making them a single income household for the unforeseeable future.
Every donation will help this incredibly strong, determined woman and her loving family.
Thank you for your love, thoughts, and massive amount of support.
We hope you will also take the time to educate yourself and your loved ones not only about the signs of a stroke, but about the precautions you can take to prevent one, including knowing the pharmaceuticals that contribute to a stroke, specifically the one that potentially caused Nicole’s.
