Raise the Flag

Donation protected
Please help us to raise the flag. We want to save the battle flag from HMS Warspite and put it on display in Marazion Museum for everyone to see.

The battleship HMS Warspite fought in both World Wars and has more battle honours than any other Royal Navy vessel in history. After the war she ended her days on Marazion beach (1950-56) - there is a unique exhibition to her in Marazion Museum. Her white ensign from World War 2 was donated to Marazion Museum by a member of the Warspite Association. This ensign would have been the only flag flying on the ship during battle and bears the scars, including several holes. The ensign is 12 foot long by 6 foot deep (ca. 3.5m x 1.8m).

We need to have the ensign professionally conserved and then stitched to a padded board and mounted in a bespoke panel so that it can be viewed and admired by generations to come and they in turn can reflect on the men who served under her and their experiences of war, as well as daily life, on board the “Grand Old Lady”, HMS Warspite.

The cost of conservation, mounting and providing a dedicated, clear-fronted panel is estimated at £2,600. We already have £600 in donations and pledges, but we need to raise the rest of the money. You can help ! Any gift, large or small, will help us towards our target.
