Education and Med needs for Chonta

My name is Maya Zimmerman and I will be returning to Peru this summer  with my family and several other friends to visit and give back to the mountian people of Chonta.

We have fallen in love with the people of Peru,  specifically the native Quechua people who remain isolated in their mountain villages. During my first visit to Peru last summer I was led down the Inca Trail by our inspiring and passionate guide, Antonio, and I learned about the history of Peru and the struggles of its native people.  Antonio shared with us the story of these communities and we wanted to help in any way that we could.

This summer we plan to stay in the remote community of Chonta and give back to these wonderful, kind people. We plan to help in any way we can by cleaning and painting the school, teaching the kids, playing with the kids (maybe even some baseball!) and learning about Andean life.   By putting energy and love into their school we hope to create an engaging place for education which we know is an essential part in ensuring self sufficiency for the community.

CHONTA is a very small community with a population of less than 150 farmers.  This community is right next to one of the deepest canyons in Peru call APURIMAC where there is also a big population of Andean Condors. While the beauty of the canyon is undeniable, access is very  difficult. The community is very remote and is more or less 4 hours by car(which no one has) from Cusco.

Money will be used for various needs in this small remote community.  We will buy supplies to clean and paint the small school while we are there in late June.  We would also like to buy some school supplies like notebooks and writing utensils.  Dr Z (my Dad) will also be helping the community with medical needs and we will use the money to purchase basic health and medical supplies for the community.

I thank you so much for helping me help these wonderful, kind people.  If you are ever able to go to Peru I can ensure you have a magical trip if you contact our friend and expert guide,  Antonio Delgado.
