Corey and Emily Loftus were married in March 2008. Six months later, in September 2008, Corey was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma which is an aggressive bone cancer. Ewing Sarcoma is a childhood cancer and it is quite rare for anyone over the age of 18 to be diagnosed with it. Corey was diagnosed when he was 27 years old and began chemotherapy at Huntsman Cancer Hospital right away. Corey became a father to a their baby girl, Talia, in December 2008. She is a daddy’s girl and the light of their lives.
He had surgery in April 2009 to remove the cancer from his left tibia. A year later he underwent a second leg surgery and more cancer was found in his left knee. He was treated with radiation and more chemotherapy. His leg and knee have been in remission since 2011 but the cancer has spread to both of Corey’s lungs. He has had several rounds of chemotherapy, many radiation treatments, and multiple lung surgeries to remove cancerous tumors. He also had open heart surgery to have a benign tumor removed from his heart in 2012.
In January 2014 Corey went in for surgery for the lung cancer and 5 new tumors were found in the lungs. He is currently undergoing aggressive chemotherapy for the lung cancer at Huntsman Cancer Hospital. The oncologist recently told them that Corey has lived with Ewing Sarcoma longer than most adults and as such there is no set regimen of treatment to give him. He remains strong through clinical trials and now a new combination of chemotherapy medications as they search for treatment for his cancer. He continues to beat the odds but he has been unable to maintain full-time or part-time work due to the surgeries, radiation treatments, and chemotherapy.
Corey is a volunteer firefighter for the Elsinore Volunteer Fire Department and he is currently serving as the chief of the department. He is also a member of the Sevier County Hazardous Materials team. Over the past 7 and a half years while Corey has been fighting Ewing Sarcoma, he has never allowed any of the surgeries, chemotherapy, or radiation to get him down. He has an amazing personality and continually makes people smile and laugh. He is a fighter and has promised his wife and 7-year-old daughter that he will never give up. Corey is truly an inspiration to all those around him.
There will be a Fundraiser at the next RedHills BMX Indoor Race on February 27th at the Black Hawk Arena in Salina, UT @ 4pm. Please join us!!
