Chloe is a happy and determined 6 year old girl who suffers from spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. The cerebral palsy is a result of a stroke suffered in utero following foetal ablation surgery for twin to twin transfusion syndrome.
Everyday tasks and movements that we take for granted can be a challenge for Chloe due to the spasticity restricting her movement. Chloe is able to walk short distances using her walker and travels longer distances in her wheel chair. She requires assistance for everyday tasks such as dressing and feeding. In time the spasticity will cause further orthopaedic problems which will more than likely require extensive surgery.
Chloe wants to experience everything life has to offer. She has a fierce determination to do tasks as independently as she can and is always trying to tell anyone assisting her that “I can do it!” She loves nothing more than trying to keep up with her twin sister Lily and we want to give her every opportunity to do so.
The good news is we have been given some hope. Chloe has been accepted as a candidate for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery in the USA. Dr TS Park and his team are the world leaders in this procedure which identifies and cuts the sensory nerves causing spasticity in the lower limbs. This procedure has the potential to change Chloe’s life! It will permanently reduce the spasticity in her legs allowing more freedom for movement, improve balance and minimise the requirement for future surgeries. We see every day how spasticity holds Chloe back and feel ready to take this step to assist her. We have not come to this decision lightly but are confident that this is the correct step to give Chloe her time to shine!
The biggest barrier for us to get Chloe to St Louis is the enormous task of raising the $100 000 needed to cover the cost of the operation, travel and therapy requirements.
