Chloe's Medical Elective in the Philippines - March 2025

Hello, my name is Chloe and I am a final year medical student at the University of Warwick. In August next year, I will be starting work as a doctor in the NHS (exam results permitting!).

Before this, in March 2025, I will be travelling to the Philippines on a medical elective placement.

During this placement, I will be working in the emergency department of a local hospital, learning from experienced healthcare professionals providing much-needed care during medical emergencies, and assisting in the deliverance of this care.

In addition to this, I will also be spending a week working in a remote village providing healthcare services for the community. I hope this experience will not only allow me to gain invaluable clinical experience which I can carry forward to my practice in the future, but also make a positive impact to the patients in the Philippines I will be supporting.

Healthcare in the Philippines faces unique challenges; in the UK there are approximately 3 doctors per 1000 people, whereas in the Philippines there is 1 doctor per 28,000 people. Additionally, there are limited resources, and access to medical equipment is sometimes scarce, especially in rural communities. On top of this, higher levels of communicable diseases like dengue, malaria and TB also puts strain on an already stretched system.

By supporting my elective, you are not only helping me to gain invaluable clinical experience that will assist me in becoming a skilled and well-rounded doctor, but also allow me to help deliver much-needed healthcare to an area that so desperately needs it.
