Chloe's Fight Against Aplastic Anemia and Journey
Donation protected
Dear Family, Friends, and Kind Supporters,
Our sweet 2-year-old daughter, Chloe, has been diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia, a rare and life-threatening condition where the body stops producing enough blood cells. Her journey began in November 2024, when she was first admitted to Duke Children’s Hospital for Autoimmune Hepatitis. Her immune system had triggered T cell activity, possibly from a virus, and her body began attacking her liver, causing her liver levels to skyrocket.
After initial treatment with hospitalization, then at-home steroids brought her liver levels back to normal, doctors discovered her blood counts were immensely low. Her white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets were all declining. Despite months of monitoring, her levels continued to drop, and Chloe began requiring blood transfusions every 2 to 3 weeks and platelet transfusions every single week.
Eventually, the hematology and oncology team determined after months of testing, exams, and bone biopsies that Chloe’s bone marrow is failing, and the viable path forward would be a bone marrow transplant. This is a critical and intense process that involves chemotherapy, some radiation, and a period of staying in the hospital for several weeks to monitor for infections, rejection, or other complications.
Chloe will also need a feeding tube (NG tube), as the side effects of chemotherapy will make it difficult for her to eat. She will also lose her beautiful hair, feel sick, and be nauseous. A chest port will be placed to administer IV medications. She’ll remain in the hospital’s transplant and cancer unit for at least 30 to 45 days.
Once discharged, she’ll still need to be within 20 minutes of Duke for frequent weekly post-transplant care visits. This means our family will need to temporarily relocate and rent housing near the hospital for about two months.
This has been an emotional, physical whirlwind, one we never expected, but we are holding on to hope and faith. We’re doing everything we can to ensure Chloe has the best chance at recovery and a healthy future.
We have an Amazon wishlist for anyone who would like to contribute some comfort items.
Additionally, a nonprofit organization is creating T-shirts for Chloe, where adult shirts will sell for $22 and youth shirts will sell for $20, and $6 of the proceeds will go directly toward her comfort care items.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your love, prayers, and support during this unimaginable time. Your kindness means the world to us and to Chloe.
With gratitude,
Chloe’s Family
