My Volunteer Trip to the Dominican

Hi, my name is Chloe Boland, I'm a sophomore at Tantasqua Regional High school. This summer I'm interested in participating in a 10 day service trip to the Dominican Republic with an organization called Global Leadership Adventures. The trip is pricey due to expensive international travel and I'm going to have to work hard to raise the funds I need but I'm more than willing and determined to do it.
The Dominican Republic is popularly known as a tourist site with beautiful beaches and a tropical getaway. Although this is true, the people of the displaced Haitan society in the Dominican struggle with poverty, low budget education, unsanitary conditions and deforestation everyday. While in the Dominican Republic, I will be volunteering to build a new school out of recycled materials, interacting with local children by playing sports, doing arts and crafts and teaching them what I can, like basic conversational English. I will aso be building clean-burning stoves to reduce deforestation and participating in seed transplantation in an effort to reforest the area.
Participating in this service adventure will allow me to experience a different culture firsthand. I've never been out of the U.S. before and going on this trip will expand my horizon. I will be able to learn more about the difficulties and issues in underdeveloped countries and I'll be able to become globally aware. This trip will also help to prepare me for what I hope to do for my career and for my life. I plan to get a medical degree and to use my skills to improve the lives of people in developing countries who don't have the same resources we do. Like everybody else, I want to see the world, but I don't want to just see it. I want to make a difference. I want to make an impact on other people's lives and going on this trip would just be the start.
