Chloe Harris Will Walk Again

Chloé Harris is a fun-loving and caring young lady who was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia at a very young age.  Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetic disease that causes the body to produce sickle-shaped red blood cells which are not capable of transporting oxygen properly throughout the body. This lack of oxygen to the cells causes sudden attacks of excruciating pain, which cause sickle cell crisis events, as well as reduced quality of life and life expectancy. Chloé has endured many painful sickle cell crisis events throughout her life and experienced numerous occasions of being rushed to the ER from school campuses at each educational level because she was determined to attend classes.  She was determined to not allow sickle cell anemia to hinder her dream to some day attend law school.  She attended Hillsboro High School in Nashville, TN and graduated with honors, attended The University of Memphis and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University. Even through her many accomplishments and determination to live a normal life, Chloé had several sickle cell crisis events that caused her to almost lose her life on several occasions.

Her last, most critical sickle cell crisis event occurred in January 2016. She went to Centennial Hospital in Nashville, TN, and met a doctor who informed her and her family that there was a cure for sickle cell anemia via a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant. Chloé and her family decided that she would undergo this procedure to cure her sickle cell anemia.  Chloé’s sister, Bethany volunteered to be a donor for her.  In order for the transplant to be successful and to prevent rejection of the transplant, Chloé had to undergo chemotherapy to weaken her immune system. The bone marrow transplant was a success and Chloé is sickle cell anemia free!  However, her compromised, weakened immune system caused her to be more susceptible and at high risk to infection producing fevers, which could be life threatening. At one point, she had a fever of 110 degrees.

In May of 2017, Chloé s infection level reached a rate that caused her to become critically ill.  Her parents went to her room and found Chloé unconscious and unresponsive due to a medullary malfunction and breakdown in her central nervous system. They immediately called 911 and emergency responders rushed her to Centennial Medical Center. Chloé was in a coma and placed on life support. Due to the prayers of loved ones and the work of the medical staff, Chloé began to respond. However, she still has a very long road to recovery, as she will have to learn how to walk and do the normal tasks of life again. To accomplish this feat, she will be transported to Atlanta, GA, approximately 225 miles away from her home and family, to a world-renowned provider of comprehensive specialized rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury, brain injury or stroke. Consequently, her family will have to bear the burden of the expense of the rehabilitation process and facilities as well as a special wheelchair, equipment and commute transport expenses, as unyielding obligations back home will not permit them to simply relocate to where Chloé will be.
