Context:

For the past 16 years, Hands for Hope School in Kampala, Uganda, has been a vital refuge for the most disadvantaged children from the Namuwongo slum. The school currently supports around 350 children by addressing their essential needs, including providing security and care.

Among them are 25 children, aged 2 to 16, living with physical and mental disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, epilepsy, and deafness. These children face extreme poverty, neglect, and often abuse. Many are left alone in their homes all day, confined to unhygienic and unsafe conditions without proper care or food.

Despite Hands for Hope’s invaluable work, the conditions for children with disabilities remain inadequate. They are confined to a small, 15m² room that lacks natural light, ventilation, and appropriate equipment. Many of these children cannot access the playground, further isolating them from other students and limiting their social and emotional development.
