Children of Mnini Pre and Primary School, Tanzania

INTRODUCTION

Hi everyone,

We’re a group of student volunteers who are working in Tanzania through the Global Leadership Adventures program. Over the past weeks, we've had the incredible opportunity to teach and connect with the kids at a local primary school in Moshi, called “Mnini Pre and Primary School”, and what we've seen has moved us beyond words. These children are full of life, laughter, and endless potential. But their school is missing some of the most basic things every child deserves.

They don’t have proper roofs, only metal covers, which means that during rainy season, they have no proper roof to protect them, causing water leakage in classrooms, making learning even harder. Additionally, the sound of the raindrops hitting the roof above makes it extremely difficult for them to hear anything their teachers say. Furthermore, there are barely enough desks, chairs, bookshelves, storage, and teaching supplies are almost nonexistent. The kitchen is tiny, cramped, making it nearly impossible to feed the vast number of students; which for many is their only meal of the day.

Our mission is to raise funds to help rebuild and improve this school. Starting with proper roofing, new furniture, classroom materials, and expanding the kitchen.

We’re not just asking for donations, we’re asking you to believe in the power of education. To believe that these kids matter. That a safer classroom, a filling meal, and a place to sit and learn can truly change a life. No amount is too small. A little bit from you means a lot to someone else. Every single dollar goes directly to this cause, and we will be working alongside the school and the Uweza Foundation to make sure your contributions are used where they are needed most.

BACKGROUND

Mnini Pre & Primary School, established in 1948, is a government school, named after the village chief, Mnini. The school is located in Moshi, and started with only 178 students, which has now expanded to 387 students.

Since opening, the school has been able to provide equitable and affordable education to the children in the community, allowing local students to study nearby, rather than walking far distances just to achieve a decent education. Furthermore, the number of students who complete Grade 7 (Middle School) has improved annually, due to the high rates of pupils passing their exams in order to be admitted to high school.

The school has faced many challenges over the past decades, such as having no toilets for teachers, no clean water supply or electricity. With the help of former students, community contributions and international collaborators, these challenges are no longer issues the school faces, which is what we intend to achieve as well.

Despite these improvements, these are only basic needs that all children and teachers should have access to. They’ve put so much effort into having these common resources, and yet they still face a number of challenges that have a damaging effect on the students learning.

These students are so joyful and have so much passion for learning. They show up to school every day, even if they don’t have notebooks or pencils to help them learn, just hoping to create a better future for themselves.

As people who can make a difference, who can change the lives of many others, we wish to give the children of Mnini Pre & Primary School all the opportunities they deserve. We believe that by achieving our goals of improving this school, we can make it possible for more children to reach their full potentials. Education is power, and all these children need is a boost to launch their lives in the best direction.
