Children in Ecuador deserve to keep learning!

A computer for a promising future

The pandemic has left thousands of Ecuadorian children temporarily out of school . With 25% of the Ecuadorian population living under the poverty line, many families cannot afford technology for online education. Recent research from the World Bank revealed that nearly 41% percent of students have neither an internet connection at home nor a computer or tablet. Consequently, many Ecuadorian children were forced to drop out of school.

Our NGO, QUID, has developed an ambitious project called “A computer for a promising future”, to deliver refurbished computers to 100 children in Quito, the nation’s capital, and the area where inequality is most pronounced. Noticeable, Quito is one of the few areas in Ecuador where families have reliable access to internet connection. By choosing Quito, we promote equal access to education in a city where opportunities are limited and educational access largely relies on technology.

With this project, Ecuadorian children will not only be able to access education again, but also, it will open doors for a prosperous future as in the 21st century these devices are needed to improve their quality of life, access information, search for funds or connect with the world, and allow them to achieve their dreams. This project goes beyond tackling inequality in education but supports objectives for sustainable development and social progress

What do we want to do?

We commit to ensuring that the gaps in education created by COVID-19 and larger structural inequalities in Ecuador do not continue to grow. Prior to COVID, a lack of access to new technologies was one of the largest issues facing Ecuadorian education. What’s more, when schools resume in-person education, students will still need laptops to continue with a proper education.

QUID has already started to work to fight this problem. In January of 2021, QUID helped a community in the Amazon (Jivino Verde) to create their first computer center where 150 children can connect again to their classes. We want to continue this project and we are collecting 100 second-hand computers, refurbishing and equipping them with Microsoft Office and other necessary educational software for a total cost of around $300 per computer. This amount will also cover materials, labor, logistical costs, and the continued support and observation for each laptop recipient throughout a two-year period[KR1] .

As one of QUID’s objectives is to create positive long term effects in society, we will collect data through a 2-year observational period that will be used to analyze the impact that the device has had in the life of each student, track their educational progress over time, and address any issues with technology glitches and defects. QUID will use this data to inform current and future projects and to continue its mission of reducing inequality in Ecuador.

 Why focus on education?

Without education, children are at higher risk of falling into the poverty trap - a threatening socio-economic situation limiting the ability of families to escape poverty due to a lack of resources. Out-of-school children are at much higher risk for child labor and the exploitation that follows.

This initiative will help some of the most vulnerable in Ecuadorian society become self-sustainable which is why we aim to pursue this project at a larger scale. In order to accomplish it, we have partnered with local organizations in different areas of Quito creating a strong network to ensure the proper development of the project.

Join us and allow this project to grow! By donating and sharing this campaign to make it viral you will change the lives of 100 children or even more!
