Help with a Childhood Dream

Donation protected
Hi! I'm Ashleigh, a Singaporean studying medicine in the University of Manchester and I am in my 2nd year currently.

I am actually 38 years old so many would ask, why at this age and why from a business degree to something so different? Well, it is all just because of a childhood dream which I had no confidence of pursuing during my teenage years as I thought that medicine was for the most cleverest people on earth.

However, because of my previous job as an insurance agent for 13 years, I met lotsa people and it made me realised that I still had a chance then to fulfil this dream and with the compassion that I have for people and encouragement from friends, I applied to many medical schools encountering umpteen times of rejection for a few years.

Finally, I was offered a place in Manchester.  The route I took was unconventional given that friends around my age then were either stable in their careers, married, with kids or were earning decent incomes. And there I was, in 2017, quit a job of high paying salary, left behind a comfortable life of 36 years back in Singapore to start all over again in the UK, just to pursue a dream that was hidden in a tiny compartment in my heart.

I hope that after becoming a doctor, I would one day be able to serve in the organisation, Medecins Sans Frontieres or  Doctors Without Border.

Hence, I am starting this campaign to raise funds for my living expenses (rental, groceries, transport) for the next 3 years as I would not have any time to work, especially to go back to my home country and be an Uber driver. I will still have to take up bank loans just to pay for my school fees, after using up all my savings.

There are friends whom I can ask for help but I don't think it's fair on them for such huge amount, bearing the worry that I can only pay them back 3 years later upon my graduation. Furthermore, my parents are retired and given my current age, I should be the one supporting them financially and I feel guilty that they are now the ones chipping in a bit for these past 2 years.

So for the amount raised in this campaign, it will really relieve the immense amount of mental stress I have been going through because of all the thinking of what I can do to earn money and also the trouble I impose on my friends for possible loans.

Any amount donated will never be too small and I am truly grateful for this kind generosity of yours. I apologise for any donation that is not in sterling pounds because of the differences in currency rates and also for the incurred transaction fees.

If ever there is an opportunity to meet a donor in person to thank you in future, please let me know!

For those who have read my story and was inspired to pursue your dreams but can't donate, please share it with your friends as I believe in the power of word of mouth.

Thank you once again for taking time to read my story.
